Homeopathy is currently one of the fastest growing forms of alternative medicine. Its safety and effectiveness are causing thousands of people to investigate what it has to offer. Even the medical profession has tested it and have found how effective it is as stated in the British Medical Journal. This leaflet has been produced to answer some of the questions most commonly asked about Homeopathy.

Homeopathy is a complete system of healing based on the principle of 'like cures like'. Medicines are prescribed in a special form which, given to a healthy person in their crude state would produce symptoms similar to those of the person to be treated. This method of treatment was introduced by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann in the early 1800's, when he discovered that crude doses of a Peruvian bark (quinine) produced in himself all the symptoms of malaria, the very disease that it was used to cure. Today there is over 2000 medicines in the homeopathic pharmacopoeia drawn from all the kingdom of nature.

Our bodies are in a constant state of self-maintenance, if you graze a finger your body in its wisdom will direct its resources to heal the wound and leave the area in a state of prefect repair. This capacity for self-healing exists throughout our entire organism, but there are occasions when help is required in order for healing to take place. In homeopathy we view symptoms as the attempt of the body to heal itself and our goal is to find a remedy which matches the symptoms closely - a remedy which is correctly prescribed will stimulate the body's own healing resources and produce a restoration to health. Homeopathy is never used to remove or suppress single symptoms, as this is always to the detriment of the total health of the individual.

The medicines go through many stages of preparation so that any toxic effects of the original substance are lost and only the curative properties remain, hence there are no side effects and no danger of overdose. If necessary, remedies can be taken together with ordinary drugs without any danger of causing a drug reaction. All of the remedies used in homeopathy are tested on healthy human volunteers to find out what symptoms they can produce ( and therefore cure ) before being given to patients. Animal tests are not used because, apart from being morally objectionable, they are unreliable in assessing the potential effects of a medicine that is subsequently given to humans. In almost 200 years of use, not a single homeopathic medicine has ever been withdrawn from use due to adverse effects.
